Jodhpur Tourism Guide

Look across blue lanes and the Thar from mighty Mehrangarh Fort.

Jodhpur, Rajasthan Best time: October to March

About Jodhpur

Jodhpur is dominated by Mehrangarh, a vast hill fort whose ramparts rise above the blue-painted lanes of the old city. Palaces, museum galleries, Jaswant Thada, the clock-tower market and Marwar food create a dense heritage experience, while Bishnoi villages and desert-edge landscapes add meaningful excursions beyond the walls.

From Dwarka, Jodhpur is a substantial interstate road journey best built into a multi-day Rajasthan circuit through Ahmedabad, Mount Abu or Udaipur. Deepali Taxi Service can arrange a private package from Dwarka with overnight pacing, luggage space and onward stops. Start fort sightseeing early, use an authorised guide if desired and reserve evenings for the old market or a rooftop view.

History & significance of Jodhpur

Rao Jodha of the Rathore clan founded Jodhpur in 1459 and established Mehrangarh above the older settlement of Mandore. The kingdom of Marwar controlled important routes across western Rajasthan, and its rulers negotiated shifting relationships with the Delhi Sultanate, Mughals and later British power. Fort palaces, armour, paintings and ceremonial objects preserve this courtly history.

The walled city expanded around markets, water systems, temples and specialised communities. Blue lime-washed houses became a celebrated visual identity, though explanations for the colour vary and should not be reduced to one story. After independence, Jodhpur became part of Rajasthan. Craft, tourism, military institutions and trade now support the city alongside its enduring role as a centre of Marwari culture.
