Bhavnagar Tourism Guide

Discover a mercantile princely city between Saurashtra’s hills and Gulf of Khambhat.

Bhavnagar, Gujarat Best time: October to March

About Bhavnagar

Bhavnagar combines the confidence of a former princely capital with a practical port-city spirit. Takhteshwar Temple surveys the urban landscape from a hill, Gandhi Smriti and Barton Museum interpret regional history, and Victoria Park protects a surprising green refuge close to busy neighbourhoods. Markets and old buildings speak to commercial links across the Gulf of Khambhat.

The city is also the preferred base for Palitana’s Shatrunjaya temples, Velavadar’s blackbuck grasslands and the tidal coast at Nishkalank Mahadev. From Dwarka the journey crosses much of Saurashtra, so a private multi-day taxi is more sensible than a hurried same-day trip. Deepali Taxi Service can arrange the route through Rajkot or coastal Gujarat with rest stops and onward connections.

History & significance of Bhavnagar

Bhavnagar was founded in 1723 by Bhavsinhji Gohil and grew into the capital of a maritime princely state. Its rulers developed port facilities, roads, railways and civic institutions, while merchants linked the city with Bombay, East Africa and other Indian Ocean markets. Planned streets, educational establishments and public buildings reflected this outward-looking economy.

The state’s last ruler, Krishnakumar Sinhji, was among the princely leaders who supported accession to independent India. Bhavnagar later expanded through trade, education, ship-related enterprise and regional services. Museums, hilltop temples and surviving civic architecture retain the princely narrative, while nearby Alang’s ship-recycling industry shows the district’s continuing maritime importance.
